Building Balance

In addition to nourishing our bodies, it's also very important to make sure we're nourishing our minds and emotions. By balancing our 'plate of life' just like we would balance a plate of food, we can help to ensure that we feel fulfilled and avoid using food to meet other needs.

To begin, consider mapping out your "plate of life," or how you spend your time. Make note of how you feel about your current reality and how it aligns (or doesn't align) with your goals. Ask yourself if there are areas you'd like to include on your map, or areas in which you'd like to devote more time. Examples might involve making more space for relationships, spirituality, creativity, education, volunteering, fun, hobbies or travel.

Once you've identified the changes you'd like to make, start taking small steps toward building up in those areas. For example, if strengthening your relationships feels most important to you, you might start by scheduling a time this week to call someone you care about. Or, if you want to incorporate more time for relaxation, begin by carving out just 10-15 minutes to meditate, practice yoga or do some deep breathing.

In order to create more time to devote to the areas that are important to you, you may also need to let go of or delegate certain tasks.

What could you say "no" to in order to be able to say "yes" to something you want to do this week?
