Douglas D. Mercer, Chairman & Founder
The founder of Wellness Foundation graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with Honors. In his professional life, Mr. Mercer worked in his family shipping business, States Marine Lines, for twenty-five years, and was CEO for the last ten. During his business years he was on the board of Moore McCormack Resources, Maremont Corporation and Paine Webber's Family of Funds.
Mr. Mercer began spending summers in the Hamptons in 1970 and was self-employed as a developer/general contractor in East Hampton in the 1990s. Following that he volunteered at Meals on Wheels and the Children's Homework Program. He raised money for the 1997 expansion of the East Hampton Library, and for three years worked on the beaches monitoring Piping Plovers, the last of which he ran the program for the Town, under the Natural Resources Director.
Mr. Mercer has researched the health benefits of good nutrition extensively and hopes to share his enthusiasm and knowledge with the East Hampton community. "I am a living nutrition experiment," he says, "What I have learned from researching and living good nutrition for the last eight years has prepared me to accomplish the goals I have outlined."
Daily exercise is a highlight of his life. As an avid outdoorsman he has a passion for saltwater flyfishing (catch & release) and competitive Laser sailing. A father of six, and grandfather of eleven, Mr. Mercer resides in East Hampton, with his second wife Pat.
